Even the thought of getting active can be daunting, but staying active does not need to be strenuous! Studies show that only 30 minutes of moderate exercise can benefit a person’s physical and mental health. Regular exercise improves flexibility and balance as well as sleep. It can reduce pain or stress and lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
As we age, we lose muscle and bone mass, leading to issues with our muscles, joints and bones. Regular exercise slows the loss of muscle mass, strengthens bones and reduces joint and muscle pain.
It is important for aging seniors to consult with their healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine.
Mobility Ideas
- Go for a walk – walk around your neighbourhood, your favourite trail, and even better, invite a friend to join you! Seniors can start with slow walks and gradually increase their distance and pace.
- Riding a bike – Kelowna has so many bike trails to explore! Check out the Mission Park Greenway or Rail Trail for a well-maintained, flat route. For some cardio, do some hill climbing in East Kelowna. If you don’t like hills, but miss the views, consider purchasing an e-bike.
- Work in your yard or community garden.
- Walk the course when golfing instead of using a cart.
- Pickleball – gives you a good aerobic workout without as much stress and strain on your joints and muscles.
- Water aerobics – Kelowna has three community centers with access to a pool. A low-impact water exercise class can be easier on achy joints. Pool walking is low impact and safe from falls.
- Yoga and/or Tai Chi improves strength, balance and flexibility. Find a class specifically designed for seniors. Classes also have a meditative aspect to help with anxiety or stress.
- Resistance training also improves strength and balance, which can reduce the risk of injuries due to a fall.
- Dancing improves heart health and keeps the brain working through coordination. Find yourself a ballroom dance class, square dancing or line dancing class.
The key to staying active is finding something you enjoy so you can get active and keep moving!
