Snow may be delayed this year, but rest assured it will finally arrive in Kelowna and, with it, an increased risk of injuries.
Here are a few safety tips to hopefully keep you standing upright this season.

Shovel & Sand
Sand and salt all stairways, walkways & driveways regularly. Have a bucket and hand shovel close to the door so you can access it easily. Hire someone in your neighbourhood or a private company to shovel your driveway/walks in heavy snowfall. Don’t wait for ice to build up.

Lighting
Ensure all stairs and walkways are well-lit so icy patches can be seen and avoided.

Door Mats
Get rid of flimsy front door mats that can become rolled up by the wind or when wiping snow off boots. A heavy-duty mat may not be aesthetically pleasing, but it can prevent injury.

Waterproof Boots
Wear waterproof boots with good grip – non-slip, non-skid soles are best. Remember to remove the shoes at the door! Snow and ice quickly melt, causing water to pool and becoming a slipping hazard inside the home.

Traction Cleats
Purchase traction cleats – these are rubber shoe harnesses with steel spikes/studs that slip over your shoe.

Special Footwear
If getting these on/off the shoes is difficult due to mobility issues, there are shoes/boots that you can purchase that have spikes built into the shoe, and you flip them down when needed.
